Please Note: This trip is hauled by vintage diesel aboard our beautiful land cruise train 'Spirit of the Lakes'
We depart from London Victoria at approximately 08:45 and head to our destination of Stratford-upon-Avon. After three hours in Stratford we return home behind one of our Diesel work horses planning to arrive in London Victoria for 20:00. The return journey will be a reverse of the outbound one.
Stratford-upon-Avon, a medieval market town in England’s West Midlands, with more than 800 years of history, is the 16th-century birthplace of William Shakespeare. Possibly the most famous writer in the English language, Shakespeare is known for his sonnets and plays such as 'Romeo and Juliet' and 'Hamlet'. The Royal Shakespeare Company performs his plays in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and adjacent Swan Theatre on the banks of the River Avon.
You may wish to visit Shakespeare's birthplace with its museum collection or maybe take a tour of Anne Hathaway's cottage with its gardens. All these attractions are on the route of the hop on hop off open top bus which operates around the town.
However there is much more to Stratford than just William Shakespeare. A charming medieval centre with timber framed buildings and lots of independent shops makes for a lovely afternoon visit. Add to this the canal with its boat tips and also the river which makes its way through the central park. Then Stratford has a most attractive centre worth a visit in its own right.
