Join us for a scenic tour that takes us across country to Preston from where steam haulage takes over to Carlisle to offer a thrilling ride over Shap with magnificent views across the English Lake District. After a break in Carlisle our vintage diesel locomotive takes over for a return journey along the Tyne Valley and East Coast route to home stations.
Departing Peterborough around 0630 with diesel traction in charge, we pick up as detailed to Doncaster (departs approx 0815), from where we make our way across country to Preston. At Preston our steam engine takes over for a scenic journey through Lancaster, Oxenholme and over Shap summit to Carlisle.
Our steam engine will have to work hard as it climbs the steep gradients and tackles the twisting route of this section of the West Coast Main Line to Carlisle. The journey offers stunning views of the mountains of the English Lake District and the noise of steam and the smell of smoke bring back nostalgic memories of rail travel from days gone by.
After a break in Carlisle of around two hours, an attractive city with its Castle, ancient city gates and pedestrianised centre, we make our return run. We travel behind a vintage diesel locomotive through the rolling hills of the Tyne Valley towards Newcastle from where we turn south and head through Durham and York to home stations where we expect to arrive mid to late evening.
