SHERBORNE

Sherborne is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful towns in England.  With its abundance of medieval buildings, superb Abbey, world famous schools, picturesque Alms House and two castles.  Sherborne still retains small and specialist businesses and there is a delightful shopping centre with a large choice of handcrafted goods and elegant fashions.  It has also become an important centre for art and antique dealers.  So leave the rush of the capital behind and step back into a time when the pace of life was slower and enjoy a stroll around Sherborne's quaint and attractive centre.

SHERBORNE AT CHRISTMAS

The historic town of Sherborne will once again light up for Christmas with a free-entry Festive Shopping Day on Sunday 4th December from 10am–4pm. Organised by volunteers from Sherborne Chamber of Trade and Commerce, the event offers a great family day out, while raising awareness for many local charities.

Sherborne’s Festive Shopping Day is always well supported with the main shopping area of Cheap Street closed to traffic. Visitors will be able to browse Sherborne’s wonderful shops, all offering great ideas for Christmas gifts, treats, pampering and entertaining as well as countless places to enjoy something to eat or drink in the many coffee shops, restaurants and pubs the town has to offer. There’s the award-winning Christmas display at Castle Gardens too, just five minutes taxidrive from the town centre.

The town’s impressive Abbey Church is regarded by many to be the 'cathedral of Dorset'. Its most beautiful feature is the stone, fan vaulted ceiling and it’s such a glorious sight to behold, you’ll gasp in wonderment.

If you’re visiting Sherborne, a trip to the town’s two castles is a must!

Wander around magnificent state rooms and Lancelot 'Capability' Brown landscaped gardens at Sherborne Castle and Gardens, the historic Digby stately home built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594. Sherborne Old Castle, by contrast, is an impressive ruin of a 12th century castle that withstood two sieges during the Civil War. Now managed by English Heritage, the grounds are a fantastic place to explore and enjoy a picnic.

Discover the town’s history at the local museums.

Grownups will love the amazing cars and bikes at Haynes International Motor Museum, from nostalgic classics of the 50s and 60s, glorious Bentleys and Rolls Royce's to exciting super cars like the Jaguar XJ220. And for the kids, there’s the Vroom Room, an interactive garage and mini road system, a construction zone with Super Diggers and so much more to get their little hands on!

At the nearby Fleet Air Arm Museum, you can go on board the first British Concorde and visit the award winning Aircraft Carrier Experience where you’ll 'fly' by helicopter to the replica flight deck of the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal!

Enjoy your day!
