Dumfries to Shrewsbury

Departing: Dumfries, Annan, Gretna Green, Carlisle, Penrith, Lancaster, Preston
Please Note: This trip is part hauled by vintage diesel and part hauled by steam

This trip replaces the one planned for the 25th March 2020. Join us for a nostalgic day out and enjoy the thrill of travelling behind a vintage steam engine to Shrewsbury.

Departing from Dumfries with diesel in charge we make our way down the West Coast Main Line through to Carnforth, where our steam engine awaits.

Our diesel is detached and our steam locomotive reverses on to the coaching stock, ready to take charge for the journey south. We can enjoy the smells and sounds of days gone by as our locomotive works hard with its heavy load en route to the historic town of Shrewsbury, where we break our journey.

Standing in a loop of the River Severn Shrewsbury is an attractive destination with its cobbled streets, half timbered buildings and pedestrianised centre, all making for a pleasant break.

After our visit we rejoin our steam hauled train for the return trip to Carnforth, where our diesel now rejoins the train and takes over for the return run along the West Coast Main Line to Dumfries.
