Settle Carlisle Thunderer I
Please Note: This trip is part hauled by Steam and part hauled by vintage diesel
Peterborough to Carlisle
Departs – Saturday 02 March 2019
From Peterborough, Grantham, Newark, Retford, Doncaster .
Join us for a thrilling return tour over England’s most famous railway, the Settle to Carlisle and enjoy a nostalgic journey behind steam to bring back memories of rail travel from days gone by.
Departing Peterborough around 0630 with diesel traction in charge, we pick up as detailed to Doncaster (departs approx 0815), from where we make our way past Leeds and through Skipton to Hellifield. At Hellifield our steam engine takes over for a scenic journey through the Yorkshire Dales and the Eden Valley to Carlisle.
Our steam engine will have to work hard as it climbs the steep gradients and tackles the twisting route of this famous railway line. The journey offers stunning views of the Three Peaks and Dentdale before continuing through the rugged scenery of the Mallerstang. We have requested a photo stop in Appleby before continuing on through the rolling scenery of the Eden Valley to Carlisle, Englands historic border city
After a break in Carlisle of around two hours, an attractive city with its Castle, ancient city gates and pedestrianised centre, we make our return run. We travel the Settle Carlisle once more to Helifield, where we say goodbye to steam and our diesel engine takes charge once again to bring us back to home stations where we expect to arrive mid to late evening.
Premier Dining On the outward journey passengers will be served a full English breakfast with complimentary Buck's Fizz plus elevenses or light lunch (depending on finalised timings).
