Join us for a great day out to remember aboard our heritage steam hauled train which will take you on a scenic journey through Cumbria to the border city of Carlisle, then returning along the Settle and Carlisle line.
This trip relives the famous 'Fifteen Guinea Special' run in August 1968. One of the Black 5's planned to be hauling this trip (44871) was used for the return leg of the original Fifteen Guinea Special, from Carlisle to Manchester.
The trip will be double headed with two engines being used from the pool of three. Possible engines hauling this trip are the 45157 'The Glasgow Highlander', the 45212 or the 44871.
Departing Manchester around 07:30 we make our way to Bolton, then Preston (we can pick passengers up in Preston, but the return journey would be dropped off in Blackburn). From Preston we pick up the West Coast Main Line, where the journey really begins.
We now enjoy the sight and smell of steam as we thunder along the West Coast Main Line with stunning views to the mountains of the English Lake District. Our engine will have to work hard as it hauls its heavyload over some of the steepest inclines on English rails which confront us on our way north.
After a break of around two hours in Carlisle, with its pedestrianised shopping centre, Castle and cathedral to enjoy, we return via the Settle and Carlisle Line, taking in views along Dentdale before crossing the famous Ribblehead Viaduct, continuing on through Settle and Hellifield, before heading back to home stations.
First opening to passengers in 1876, the Settle - Carlisle line takes in 20 viaducts, 14 tunnels and countless beautiful vistas along its 72 mile track. This historic line travels across the stunning Pennine hills, showcasing the English countryside at its best.
includes a full English breakfast with Freshly brewed coffee and fine teas on the outward journey. Followed by a delicious four course dinner will be served on the return leg.
First Class passengers will be served a selection of Tulip muffins on the outward journey and a savoury of the day, followed by a selection of cakes on the return journey. To accompany this, there will be a complimentary service of freshly brewed coffee and fine teas for both legs of the journey.
Regretfully we are unable to offer any other special dietary requirements (i.e. nut allergy, vegan, gluten free diets etc).
Standard Class passengers have access to a buffet for the purchase of light refreshments.
Premier Dining and First Class passengers can book a private table for 2 for a supplement of £20.00 per person (subject to availability).
The following Pick-Up and Set-Down stations are available on this excursion
