Due to planning restrictions, we have now been issued with a revised route for this trip on the 18th December to Carlisle - The altered route will now head North up the Westcoast main line over Shap on the outbound journey and on the return journey we will travel south along the famous Settle - Carlisle Line.
Join us for a great day out to remember. For the first part of our journey from Manchester to Carnforth the trip will be hauled by a vintage diesel engine. At Carnforth the 'Flying Scotsman' famous steam engine will take over for the journey to Carlisle via the West Coast Main Line which takes us over Shap - the highest point on the line - and past The English Lake District,.
After a break of over three hours in Carlisle, we head south for the return journey, where it is steam all the way from Carlisle to Manchester!! aboard our heritage steam hauled train along the famous Settle to Carlisle line.
The Flying Scotsman set two world records for steam traction, becoming the first steam locomotive to be officially authenticated at reaching 100 miles per hour (160.9 km/h) on 30 November 1934, and then setting a record for the longest non-stop run by a steam locomotive when it ran 422 miles (679 km) on 8 August 1989 while in Australia.
Departing Manchester around 07:30 we make our way to Bolton, then Preston (we can pick passengers up in Preston, but on the return journey passengers would have to disembark at Blackburn).
