The Pendle Dalesman 4
Please Note: This trip is part hauled by vintage diesel and part hauled by steam
Doncaster to Carlisle
Departs – Saturday 27 October 2018
From Doncaster, Adwick, Wakefield, Leeds, Keighley and Skipton.
Join us for a nostalgic day to remember travelling behind a vintage steam locomotive along England's most famous railway.
Our journey will be diesel hauled from its starting point to Hellifield which is just south of Settle Junction the start of the famous line to Border country. At Hellifield our diesel will be detached and our vintage steam engine takes over for the thrilling ride through the rugged Dales countryside to the attractive city of Carlisle.
From the outset the engine will have to work hard as it hauls our train up 'The Long Drag' a climb to Ais Gil summit the highest point of the line at 1,169 feet above sea level. The thunderous noise of the engine and the evocative smells of smoke and the sight of steam will bring back memories of old as our train makes its way north.
Continuing on we pass over the stunning Ribblehead Viaduct before plunging into Blea Moor Tunnel - the longest on the line. We leave the views of the three peaks behind as we pass through Dent the highest station on the line. We then make our way through Kirkby Stephen and pretty Appleby with its castle and the scenery opens out into the more sedate rolling countryside of the Eden Valley.
After enjoying views of the River Eden and the Eden Gorge we arrive in Carlisle where there will be time for a photo or two before the engine is replenished and prepared for another hard run back to Hellifield and a second chance to enjoy the beautiful vistas from the train.
At Hellifield we say goodbye to our steam engine and diesel once again takes over for the run home.
