A chance to enjoy a long distance and steam charter from Whitby and the Esky Valley. The train departed Whitby around 0720 and made its way diesel hauled along the Esk Valley through Middlesbrough to York. Once in York Steam took over a nostalgic trip through the southern dales, Via Clapham, to the historic university of Lancaster, with its castle, museum and riverside walks.
The thrill of steam travel and glorious scenery combined for a great day out by heritage train. After a break in Lancaster the train returned, with diesel in charge again the scenic West Coast main line through Carlisle and across the Tyne Valley arriving back into Whitby around 2200.
As usual the train conveyed standard, first class and dining coaches, with all seats at tables. First and standard class passengers were able to purchase teas, coffee and light refreshments from the buffet whilst those passengers travelling dining were served breakfast and elevenses on the outward journey with a four course dinner being served on the return.
